Ad Astra schoolBulb Planting Autumn 2008

Each year the Poole in Bloom budget provided by the Council buys several thousand spring bulbs which normally include a range of standard and dwarf daffodils, mixed crocus and some native bluebells.  Planting is carried out at open spaces across the Borough by enthusiastic volunteers including residents, Ward Councillors and school pupils.  This year sites included Branksome, Broadstone, Canford Cliffs, Creekmoor, Hamworthy, Talbot Village and outside the Church of the Good Shepherd at Alderney.

She followed this by donning her wellies on a Saturday morning to join local residents Jo and John Reynolds, together with colleagues Cllrs Chris Matthews and Graham Curtis, in creating an area of daffodils and bluebells in the woods between Longfleet Drive and Bettiscombe Close (pictured left).

New Judge for Poole in Bloom

An exciting start to 2008 with the return to Poole of Ben Turner.  Ben, now 25 yrs old, won the Young Poole in Bloom competition when he was just fourteen, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, a former parks director for the town, and we're pleased to welcome him to the judging panel for this year's Front Garden of the Year competition.  Ben returns from a position with the Royal Horticultural Society’s prestigious Wisley Gardens in Surrey.  In 2006 he became Young Horticulturalist of The Year not long after winning a 2005 scholarship from the British Institute of Landscape Industries to study indigenous plants in South Africa.  He graduated from the University of Essex with a BSc (Hons) in Horticulture.

Poole in Bloom, through an allocated budget from the Council's Leisure Services unit, is delighted to be able to sponsor the 'charity bed' in Poole Park.  The raised bed is available annually to local charities celebrating a special anniversary or other milestone.  This year we accepted an application from the committee of Poole Flying Boats Celebration, and on 27th June they unveiled the unique carpet bedding display.  Bedding was designed and grown by Kernock Park Plants; it was planted and is maintained by Continental Landscapes.

Annette Brooke MPBroadstone in Bloom

In 1996 the telephone and cable service supplier Nynex was digging up the pavements of Broadstone.  Cllr. Annette Brook (now Annette Brooke MP) persuaded the company to donate funds for local floral enhancements and Broadstone in Bloom was conceived.

Denise Hill tells what happened next.

Hamworthy in Bloom 2008

Local residents and Councillors have come together in Hamworthy to launch a local 'in Bloom' initiative.  Paula Knight joined the Poole in Bloom committee earlier in the year and together with Mrs Christine Eaton (of Friends of Hamworthy Park and the Dog Walkers Action Group) has been clearing and replanting several 'abandoned' planters and beds along Blandford Road.

Paula has also organised for two large wooden planters to be installed in the Blandford Road street scene, while Poole's Leisure Services and local business funded two new permanent brick-built planters outside the walls of Old Rope Walk.  They were planted up in July by Paula Knight, ably assisted by her grandchildren Rebecca and Kieran (photo right).

Canford Heath in Bloom 2008

Poole in Bloom member Cllr. Sandra Moore succeeded in transforming the 'Asda' roundabout in Canford Heath using grasses and heathers.   Planting was completed in June; here Sandra tells how it came about
