In 1996 the telephone and
cable service supplier Nynex was digging up the pavements of
Broadstone. Cllr. Annette Brook (now Annette Brooke M.P.)
persuaded the company to donate funds for local floral
enhancements and Broadstone in Bloom was conceived.
Flowerbed Enhancements
The Nynex donation was used to purchase tubs to
brighten up shop fronts in the Broadway and shrubs were bought
and used to replant several of the flowerbeds.
A meeting was then called to try to interest
local groups in taking part in brightening up the rest of the
shopping area.
The Evening W.I. offered to renovate one of the
flowerbeds and at a later date the Horticultural Society took
on another. Eventually the W.I. began to renovate all
the other flowerbeds.
Residents & Traders become
involved
Two residents of Grange Road undertook to look
after flowerbeds near their homes. Shops and offices
agreed they would like to get involved and each year some 40
or 50 tubs and baskets are now planted up and delivered to
Broadstone by Victoria School's Horticultural department.

Originally ordered through
Poole's Leisure Services unit, the responsibility for tubs and
baskets has now fallen to Broadstone in Bloom, funded and
maintained by local traders.
The Broadstone in Bloom team also care for
three large planters, two of which belong to the Council and
another paid for by donation.
Bulb
Planting, Plant Sales & Litter Picks
Every year we plant bulbs supplied by Poole in
Bloom and hold a spring plant sale.
We also organise an annual litter pick in the
spring, with local residents joining in to clean up the centre
of Broadstone.
For most of the period since 1996 we have been
represented on the Poole in Bloom committee, helping out with
activities such as the 'Front Garden of the Year' competition
and supporting the annual summer Fun Day at Upton House.
With financial support from local organisations
and business, and with all work carried out by volunteers, we
are a self-financing group.
