This article apeared in Poole News Oct/Nov 2007Chestnut Nursery

Adjacent to the western entrance of Poole Park, Chestnut occupies the former Poole Council nursery site and is open to the public six days a week selling a wide variety of perennials, shrubs, ornamental grasses and seasonal crops. The nursery is a registered charity and a Sheltered Work Opportunities Project (SWOP).

The project provides meaningful work in a supportive and pressure-free environment, for adults with severe and enduring mental illness. SWOP aims to use the therapeutic nature of horticulture to restore mental well-being.

Grace Reynolds, Nursery Manager, said: "Many local residents don’t even know the nursery exists. We are constantly trying to raise our profile and encourage people to come and see our great selection of plants or to support us in other ways".

Thanks to the hard work of Chestnut’s dedicated group of volunteers, the project is flourishing. Five greenhouses have been repaired and most of the two acre site cleared, so the nursery is growing plants almost to full capacity.

Chestnut aims to give volunteers the opportunity to learn - or relearn - basic skills in a supportive environment. Working in all aspects of the nursery, volunteers can be involved with seed sowing, potting plants, watering, serving customers in the shop, general plant care, carpentry, construction work, installing irrigation systems, re-glazing greenhouses, as well as office and computer work.

By providing a place where people can mix with others who truly empathise, make friends, and feel valued and respected, the project aims to help volunteers to gain confidence, self esteem and dignity. Chestnut offers a wide range of social activities, outings and events which can assist volunteers to become more independent and broaden their outlook.

One volunteer inspired to enter his own front garden in Poole in Bloom, has won an award for best community front garden which will be presented at Upton House in October. On hearing the news, he said: "This is the best day of my life – apart from my wedding day. Working at the nursery has done so much for me.  I feel stronger."

Plant sales alone will never cover expenses so the nursery relies heavily on fundraising or donations in order to continue its valuable work.

If you can help support this project in any way call Grace Reynolds, Nursery Manager Tel. 685999.

The nursery in Kingland Road is open Monday – Friday 8.30am – 3.30pm and Saturdays 8.30am – 3.00pm.
